Blue Belles
By Sarah Daniels

According to Peter Som, the one must-have item for Spring 2010 is a “pale blue jacquard sheath that can take you from day to evening.” Likewise, Tommy Hilfiger—famous for his use of the blue family—names “a soft-washed cotton jacket in cool beach tones [like] sea blue” as one of his top picks for the season.

In fact, the fashion community as a whole is flocking to cool hues. “Blue seems to be the common thread between all of the designers,” notes Helena Krodel, director of media and special events for the Jewelry Information Center. “It tends to be the most classic color—with gemstones, as well. Blue stones are always carried so abundantly in retail stores.”

Of its top 10 picks for the season ahead, Pantone has included two shades of blue: Turquoise and Amparo. Of the latter, the color powerhouse says, “With more warmth than the typical spring navy, this particular shade of blue is extremely appealing because of its brighter, more energetic attitude.”

Contrary to its reputation as a “sad” color, blue seems to be creating an uplifting effect this year. Peter Som notes that his “deeply aqua blue” color choices “reflect the need for happy, mood-lifting colors that offer a bit of escapism.”

This year’s shades are inspired by surf and beach culture and a love affair with tropical getaways. Shaun Kearney of Cynthia Steffe references “Atlantis, the unknown, mountains, and waterfalls,” while Adrienne Vittadini looks to “the crystal blue waters of Capri.”

Vittadini explains, “The cool tones instantly provide a feeling of relaxation, as if you were on an endless vacation.” As such, be prepared for a broad range of blues in:

  • Chunky turquoise rings and cuffs;
  • Ornate diamond and sapphire pieces;
  • Feminine necklaces with aquamarine and blue topaz;
  • Designs featuring minerals like agate, apatite, and beryl;
  • Organic shapes in corundum, iolite, and lapis lazuli;
  • Translucent cabochons in a wide variety of shades; as well as
  • Accessory accents, such as eyeglasses chains and shawls.  JQ
